Cambridge B2 First: Your Complete Preparation Guide

What is Cambridge B2 First?

The Cambridge B2 First (formerly known as FCE) is one of the world's most recognised English qualifications. It proves you can communicate effectively in English at an upper-intermediate level.

Exam Structure

Reading and Use of English (1 hour 15 min): Seven parts testing grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.

Writing (1 hour 20 min): Two tasks — a compulsory essay plus one from a choice of formats.

Listening (approximately 40 min): Four parts with a range of text types and question formats.

Speaking (approximately 14 min): Four parts conducted in pairs with two examiners.

Common Pitfalls

  • Spending too long on Part 1 Reading and running out of time
  • Writing task 2 without planning — always spend 5 minutes planning
  • Not practising collaborative Speaking tasks with a partner

Top Tips for Success

  1. Read the exam specifications thoroughly
  2. Practise under timed conditions every week
  3. Build a bank of B2-level vocabulary with example sentences
  4. Get your writing marked professionally at least once per month
  5. Watch English TV and films without subtitles regularly
